Smudge Yarns is an online shop, set up by Sara Breitenfeldt, a Wisconsin native, now based in county Cork. The company is an offshoot of a successful crowd funding project on Kickstarter.com which enabled Sara to buy a spinning wheel and carder and invest in Irish fleeces. Smudge Yarns endeavour to buy locally-produced wool and fleece from Irish farmers at a fair price and with it, create artisan, home spun yarn. Beautiful spun and dyed skeins of yarn and batts of spinning fibre can be bought from the website or on etsy.com and also from various shops across the country.
I purchased this skein of Smudge yarn from the on-line shop. It is eighty per-cent pure Irish Wool, with the remaining twenty per-cent made from Seacell, which I believe is a derivative of cellulose and seaweed! One hundred grams, one hundred and forty yards of two ply DK yarn, enough for a hat or other small project. And best of all it, is one hundred per-cent guaranteed Irish!
