Markree Wool Craft

While visiting friends up Sligo way some weeks back, we made a detour to Markree Castle just outside Collooney on the road to Dromahair. Markree CastleIn the grounds of this historic castle Mary Cooper, of Markree Wool Craft raises, shears, spins and dyes fleece from her flock of Wensleydale sheep and fleeces sourced locally from nearby farmers. 035The yarns are prepared using eco-friendly products and non-toxic commercial dyes which are usually dye fast.  A little essential oils are added to the yarn to deter the moths as the spin is set. Mary Cooper sells the majority of her yarns through a little outlet in the Castle reception area but yarn and fibres are also available to buy on-line in her etsy shop. A nice variety of yarns were for sale in the castle including yarns from Jacob and Wensleydale sheep and natural Alpaca.  There were a few needle felted characters and felted soap on display too.

With such a variety on display, it was a tough challenge to make a purchase. With a little help and advice from the bookworm princess, we narrowed it down to two, ” A Soft Morning” and  “Autumn Again“.212

A Soft Morning is as lovely as the name suggests. The yarn, made from Wensleydale cross, is a soft greyish purple colour with Sugar Plum Angelina through it.

Autumn Again is reminiscent of an autumn eve as the leaves begin to turn and the trees are full of fruit and berries. This yarn  is made using the short bits that are left over after combing the washed Wensleydale  fibre. The fibre is then dyed, carded and spun into this beautiful yarn.
